CV hints

  • Keep a CV to two sides of A4. Use a readable font and size, and keep things simple – don’t rely on gimmicks to get your message across
  • Use reverse chronology (most recent items first) for all sections. If you are starting out in your career you may prefer to put your education details first. For more experienced candidates, ensure that work experience comes first
  • Put your name clearly at the top, followed by employment history/education, then IT skills, professional development and interests
  • Conclude with an offer of references, e.g. Reference available upon request
  • Bullet points look clear and will help you to be more concise: start each with a dynamic word and avoid overuse of “I” – it’s dull and repetitive
  • Always read the job description and person specification and include specific packages/systems that you have working knowledge of (eg Microsoft Word, Frontpage) especially if they are relevant to the job that you're aplying for
  • Sell your achievements and don’t be shy (but do tell the truth!)
  • Don’t be too anecdotal or discursive – keep it snappy

Sell your skills

  • If moving sector, use your CV and the interview to demonstrate that your skills are transferable
  • Demonstrate that you are a suitable candidate for promotion by highlighting burgeoning experience, and giving examples of having worked above and beyond expectation: don’t be bound by your job description – see the bigger picture

Application letter

  • Keep to one page, and type the letter, (unless otherwise directed)
  • Ensure that you tell the client what you bring to the role – use words and phrases from the job description to highlight your suitability
  • Bear in mind that you are aiming to convey what you offer the employer, not what they can do for you
